Belbin Tests

Belbin tests are a simple multi-choice type which can be completed in twenty minutes either on-line or on-paper. The output from the Belbin tests is a detailed report showing team role profiles for an individual and can include 360-degree feedback. In addition the report can also compare the individual’s profile to an ideal profile for the job. The Belbin tests can also be used to produce a profile for a complete team highlighting strengths and weaknesses within the team.

The Belbin Test

The Belbin Test is easy to complete and requires the allocation of points across a number of statements. Most people are concerned when asked to complete any type of test in case the results expose a significant weakness that could affect their future. The Belbin Test reports on behaviour and does not carry out an pschological analysis of the individual. The Belbin Test is interested in teams and the roles individuals play when they are members of different teams. You can use the Belbin Test to understand yourself, other individuals and explore the difference in performance of teams when you change the team members.

Belbin team roles

Belbin team roles is a system developed by Dr. M. Belbin and proved by extensive research and development over more than twenty years. The system considers an individual’s preference for the role they play when they inter-react with other people. A variety of team-role types have been identified:-

  • Plant. Creative, imaginative, unorthodox, solves difficult problems.
  • Resource Investigator. Extrovert, enthusiastic, communicative. Explores opportunities, develops contacts.
  • Co-ordinator. Mature, confident, a good chairperson. Clarifies goals, promotes decision making, delegates well.
  • Shaper. Challenging, dynamic, thrives on pressure. The drive and courage to overcome obstacles.
  • Monitor Evaluator. Sober, strategic and discerning. Sees all options, judges accurately.
  • Teamworker. Co-operative, mild, perceptive and diplomatic. Listens, builds, averts friction.
  • Implementer. Disciplined, reliable, conservative and efficient. Turns ideas into practical actions.
  • Completer Finisher. Painstaking, conscientious, anxious. Searches out errors and omissions, delivers on time.
  • Specialist. Single-minded, self-starting, dedicated. Provides knowledge and skills.

We have looked at a number of systems which consider teams and this is the best system we could find. It is possible to look at existing teams and understand areas of conflict and under-performance. It is also possible to look at an existing team, identify gaps in the composition of the team and use this information to select potential new members.

180 degree feedback and 360 degree feedback

The Belbin system can also provide a 180-degree and 360-degree feedback to an individual and compare the individual’s self-perception with the feedback and even compare both with an idealised profile for a particular position.
