Apter

Professor Michael Apter has developed a number of systems which consider motivational styles based on "Reversal Theory". Most psychometric tests started life in the field of psychology which has been mainly interested in defects of the mind and how to correct them. The Apter system considers a number of motivational states and also looks at what we like doing. People are considered to be inherently inconsistent in that they may react in a particular way on one day and react very differently on another day or in a different setting.

Reversal Theory

Apter is based on "Reversal Theory" which recognises eight motivational states that are grouped into four apposing pairs. Individuals reverse between states and may be in all four states simultaneously although they may spend more time in some states.

We make use of two Apter tools:-

Apter Motivational Style Profile - AMSP

AMSP looks at the eight motivational states and assesses what proportion of time a person tends to stay in a particular state. In general it is considered better to experience each motivational state equally and not to always revert to one type of response.

Apter Leadership Profile System - ALPS

ALPS looks at the "climate" a leader produces at work and the effect this has on the motivation of subordinates. The system uses a 180-degree feedback system and therefore requires a fairly courageous leader who is prepared to accept anonymous feedback from their subordinates.
